How to get started

There are a variety of questions that a new purchasing agent can pose to his or her supplier that will help make carbon black buying less confusing. Some of these questions are:

  1. How is pricing determined on a monthly or quarterly basis?

  2. What influences the price of carbon black?

  3. How are the average oil and natural gas prices determined that affect pricing?

  4. Which carbon black plant will my material come from?

  5. Why is a contract advantageous?

Answer:

Since the production of carbon black relies so heavily on oil and natural gas the price of the carbon black will be determined by an average oil (feedstock) and natural gas price. In monthly pricing the average of the previous two months traded oil and natural gas prices will be used. The oil price will be based on No. 6 Fuel Oil (water born, 3% Sulfur) as quoted by Platt’s Oilgram Price Report, Product Price Assessments. The natural gas price will be reported on www.eia.doe.gov >Natural Gas > Natural Gas Weekly Update > Spot Prices ($ per MM Btu) > Henry Hub.
