How to get started

There are a variety of questions that a new purchasing agent can pose to his or her supplier that will help make carbon black buying less confusing. Some of these questions are:

  1. How is pricing determined on a monthly or quarterly basis?

  2. What influences the price of carbon black?

  3. How are the average oil and natural gas prices determined that affect pricing?

  4. Which carbon black plant will my material come from?

  5. Why is a contract advantageous?

Answer:

It is important to know that not all plants make all grades of carbon black; therefore, you should ask your supplier which plant a grade is sourced from. You should also inquire as to whether the price is FOB or delivered that way you understand all freight costs and options.
