How to get started

There are a variety of questions that a new purchasing agent can pose to his or her supplier that will help make carbon black buying less confusing. Some of these questions are:

  1. How is pricing determined on a monthly or quarterly basis?

  2. What influences the price of carbon black?

  3. How are the average oil and natural gas prices determined that affect pricing?

  4. Which carbon black plant will my material come from?

  5. Why is a contract advantageous?

Answer:

Carbon black contracts help solidify supply lines. Once you sign a contract the supplier will enter your needs into their yearly forecast reducing the likelihood chance of running out of inventory on the grades you need. Carbon black is a high maintenance product causing carbon black companies to take scheduled maintenance downtimes that could last weeks. Companies that spot buy may experience supply issues during maintenance times or if the supplier is sold out since contract customers will be serviced first.
